What are Traits?
A Trait in The Elder Scrolls Online is a special property that’s added to a crafted item which enhances the item based on the trait that is applied. Adding a trait to an item is optional, and there is a set of Traits specific to armor, weapons, and jewelry. (Please note that jewelry crafting is only available if you own the Summershet Chapter.)
Note that traits and enchantments are two separate things. Traits are applied during crafting or possibly an inherent part of the gear when looted (and can be changed using transmutation) and enchantments are applied after the item is crafted or looted.
How to Research Traits
In order to be able to apply a trait to an item during crafting you must first research that trait. To research a particular trait you must find an item that already possesses that trait.
TIP: You can find most of the traits and items you need from guild traders.
For example, if you are wanting to apply the training trait to a plate helmet then you must first find a plate helmet with the training trait. You would then find a blacksmith station (most towns have one) and research that trait .
PLEASE NOTE: When an item is used for research that item is DESTROYED!
In order to unlock every trait you must research each trait for each item separately. Below is a list of the number of traits for each crafting category.
|Category||# of Traits||Skill Line|
|Jewelry Crafting||18||Lapidary Research|
You can research multiple traits (up to 3) within a category if you spec into the respective skill lines. For example, you can learn a trait for plate helmet, plate gloves, and plate belt simultaneously. However, please note that you can not learn multiple traits for a single item simultaneously. For example, you can not research more than 1 thing at a time for the item plate helmet.
There are some traits that can not be researched, and therefore, can only be obtained via looting. These traits are Ornate and Intricate. Ornate increases the selling price of an itemby x% and intricate increases the amount of inspiration (crafting xp) received when deconstructing an item. Please note it does not increase inspiration when the item is equipped, only when deconstructed.
Time Required to Research Traits
Below is a chart that depicts the time investment required to research the traits. You do not have to research traits in any particular order, and the time required to research is increased with every item researched.
Please note: The times listed below are in real time. The timer will continue to run even when you’re not logged into the game. Also note that these times are without any time reduction. You can obtain up to a 25% reduction in research time, capped at 30 days, by placing skill points into the appropriate skills lines. You can further reduce the research time by 10% by subscribing to ESO plus. There are also research scrolls that can be obtained from the crown store that will reduce the research time required as well.
|# Researched||Time Per Trait||Total Research Time|
|1st||6 Hours||6 Hours|
|2nd||12 Hours||18 Hours|
|3rd||24 Hours or 1 Day||42 Hours|
|4th||48 Hours or 2 Days||90 Hours|

How to Apply a Trait to an Item
Once you have your trait(s) researched you can now apply that trait to an item during crafting or change it through transmutation. In order to do this you must have the required research (discussed above) and the required material, which is a trait gem. The cost to add a trait to an item is 1 gem. You will need to find the appropriate crafting station (blacksmith, clothing, woodworking, jewel crafting) and begin the crafting process. During crafting you will see an option at the bottom of the crafting menu (below style) to apply a trait. You simply select the desired trait and it will be applied when the item is crafted.
How to Obtain Trait Gems
Trait gems are considered a semi rare loot item that can be looted from containers such as crates, bookshelves, barrels, trunks, etc. You also have a chance to obtain trait gems when you refine raw materials at a crafting station, as well as, when you deconstruct an item at a crafting station. When deconstructing an item IF you receive a gem it will always be the gem for the trait that was on the item prior to deconstructing it.
Trait Gem Types and Properties
The below chart is a chart of all of the gem types, traits, and properties. Use the search function above the chart to filter by armor, weapon, and jewelry. You can also filter by trait. Please note there are multiple pages of the chart. There is “next” button at the bottom of the chart.
The trait enhancement increases as the quality of the gear increases. Note that you have to increase the quality of the actual gear item. You do not increase the quality of the trait gem or trait itself. The chart depicts the amount of increase per the increases in gear quality level.
Also note that in cases where numbers (Not %’s) are listed the values are depicted for Champion Rank 160.
